The environmental sections reflect the current emphasis on greenhouse gas emissions and carbon management, updates to CAAA regulations and timelines and the latest developments in the use and control of refrigerants.

This second edition represents a major update to the first edition. Nearly every chapter has been amended to reflect the latest technology advancements and many changes and developments in the areas of utility and environmental regulation. While these will always be subject to change, fuel and utility rates were updated in the various examples to reflect current conditions.

In the technology section, new or modified technologies were included and equipment and system efficiency, performance, and pricing were updated to reflect the latest developments. Advancements and developing cycle modifications were included for reciprocating engines, combustion gas turbines, and combined cycles. Updates on various gasification methods were included in several chapters. The chapter on renewable and alternative power technologies has been updated with focus on advancements and market penetration in wind and solar power technologies.

The utility section was updated to reflect the current state of deregulation and market pricing, and includes a discussion on smart grid and other emerging programs. Updates to the Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act and the evolution of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 were provided along with updates on the independent system operator function and retail wheeling. Discussion on the extreme volatility in oil and gas prices and changes in electric utility rates and rebate programs since the first edition has been provided.

The environmental sections were revised to reflect the current emphasis on climate change and greenhouse gas emissions and carbon management. Carbon dioxide emissions data and climate change considerations were also added to the chapters on heating value and combustion of fuel. Other environmental updates include Clean Air Act amendments, regulations, and timelines and the latest developments in the use and control of refrigerants since the issuance of the Montreal Protocols.

The technologies addressed in the application sections were also updated to reflect latest developments, including improved efficiency and performance and cost data. The mechanical drive chapter discusses improvements and maturity of various technologies, notably electric motor ratings and variable speed controls. Cooling and refrigeration technologies were also updated, including changes in refrigerant types and phase-outs and overall performance.

Numerous examples were re-crafted to reflect updated equipment performance, energy rate pricing, and equipment. A discussion on the volatility of utility rates was added to the technical analysis chapter. Case studies were modified accordingly and a general update of currently available financing vehicles was included.
